I have to agree with Kimiko. Humorous sidekicks really add to the reading experience. One of the funniest sidekicks I've encountered is Jim the demon dog in Katie MacAlister's Aisling Grey Guardian Series. I can't count the number of times I laughed out loud reading the first book You Slay Me. Jim is an absolute riot!

Thanks for the comment Carolyn. I loved the article that Rebecca wrote for TaleChasing.

I've been working on trying to decide who the side kick is/should be for my own story. I love the little bits of comic relief that side kicks can add.

Hi Carolyn,
Well, given the average lifespan for a hamster, I'm afraid to say that he probably should have died eons ago. I know, I'm so morbid, but isn't it funny how attached we can become to a sidekick, even if it can't speak? Sometimes the sidekick will garner all of my emotional involvement and attachment, and that's what happened with Jenks in Harrison's series too. I love that little guy.

I really love this extended meditation on sidekicks, an issue I never really thought much about. And probably should. I esp love this:

"If I could conjure the perfect sidekick it would be funny, fierce, and otherworldly."

I can totally see why the ferret helped sell Spellbent. Look at the little guy! How cute!! I always liked Stephanie Plum's hamster, and God help Janet Evanovich if she ever kills that thing off.

On the Kim Harrison, I remember, I read that first book, and I was so worried about Jenks, and sort of annoyed that the main character didn't care more about keeping him safe, that I couldn't go on with the series. I've gotten over it and mean to pick up #2 now.
